Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
