Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
