A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old media personality was approached by three suspects, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The motive of the shooting is unknown and no arrests have taken place, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Authorities revealed that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a premises close to the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the property supervising the installation of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.

"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement said.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what appeared to be a security uniform firing shots on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but collapsed a short distance away.

It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the attack.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the scene.

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have have information to come forward.

"We know they traveled on foot after the shooting, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to establish their whereabouts," added an official.

His sister, Nicole Stock, said the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"I am in shock. I don't have words," were her words.
"We know he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were willing to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."

She urged the citizens to avoid sharing explicit content from the scene, saying this was an deeply traumatic time, especially for Stock's young family.

In a statement, the broadcaster he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his charisma, warmth and quick humor, adding that his influence "will endure".

Context of Crime

South Africa, the region's leading economy, has one of the globally elevated murder rates, exacerbated by theft-related violence and gang violence, with some 63 people murdered daily between April and September, according to government figures.
