Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
