Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities shared video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
