Liverpool's Captain Concedes Squad is in a Mess, Challenges Players on Responsibility
Virgil van Dijk has issued a scathing assessment of Liverpool's woeful championship campaign, admitting the reigning champions are in disarray and failing manager Arne Slot while questioning whether all squad members is owning up for the current downturn.
Van Dijk could not contain his frustration after the weekend's heavy loss at Anfield by Nottingham Forest, a result that saw the Reds in the bottom half of the top-flight standings with a deficit in goals. The club's chair was in attendance to observe Liverpool’s latest loss in recent outings, their eighth loss in eleven fixtures across all competitions, and a display that fell apart against a Forest side that started the day in the relegation zone.
“Unacceptable” Start and Defensive Lapses
The captain labeled Liverpool’s opening after halftime as “unacceptable” and admitted “panic kicked in” as soon as the Forest player gave Sean Dyche’s team the lead. Forest’s opener was the ninth concession Liverpool have allowed from dead-ball situations in the current campaign.
“We had a great three or four days’ preparation but in a fixture you are dealing with facts and the truth is we conceded a free-kick in the first half and a poor concession at the start of the second half,” stated the defender. “As a team, we're certainly failing the manager, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. You look at yourself first and then you help each other, you work together to escape of this mess because at the present time it is a difficult situation – that’s just a fact.
Van Dijk’s Demands: Step Up
The skipper typically addresses the press after a match as part of his duties as team leader. Saturday was different, however. He spoke was much louder – so loud that any teammate in the stadium corridors could hear him – and he expressed visible fury while urging the squad to respond. “You should be angry,” he emphasized. “The key point for me is that each individual has to take responsibility.” When questioned whether that is happening, Van Dijk answered: “It's unclear. But you have to do that. It’s the main thing I want the boys to do. It’s not easy during difficult times but we must act if we aim to recover of this.”
Squad Investment and Broader Issues
The Merseyside club invested almost £450 million to replenish a title-winning squad in the summer but have regressed, with new arrivals failing to make an impact so far. Van Dijk maintained that Liverpool’s problems go beyond the recent additions. “It’s tough for everyone,” he said. “My expectation is for everyone to be answerable on the field. We have to do that in order to push each other, to make each other better. If a teammate presses, you must join the effort. These are fundamentals but they're lacking enough.”
Appeal to Stick Together
The Dutchman added: “In the current term we lack any consistency, we allow excessive scores, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I trust this is recognized. It's vital to take responsibility to reverse the situation and tempting to point fingers but unity is essential. We have been through it together and won the league and all contributed, and during a challenging phase you have to stick together and not point fingers.
“You have to be a man and confront the hardship and persist, repeatedly because if you want to give up then you are at the wrong place in my eyes, because this club has been enduring numerous challenges over those years and we’ve always come out of it. But it doesn’t mean it is easy, it’s exhausting but there is only one path forward.”
Looking Ahead
Next up in the Premier League is a visit to London Stadium next weekend, after the midweek visit of PSV in the European competition. He commented: “Wednesday is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? Certainly not, I'll go home and analyze how we can improve results and hopefully that is what everyone is doing as well.”
