The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the footage.

We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
