NY Launches Reporting Tool for Public to Report ICE Videos After Detentions of 4 American Citizens

New York state AG has introduced a fresh reporting form asking citizens to provide images and footage of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This step follows a day after a high-profile immigration operation rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking large-scale protests.

US Citizens Arrested In Enforcement Action

A congressional representative disclosed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "nearly 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations erupted in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Each citizen is entitled to live without fear," the attorney general declared in a statement.

"Anyone who observed and captured ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to share that footage with us. We are pledged to examining these submissions and determining any wrongdoings."

Portal Features

The form provides fields to upload visual evidence of the incident, plus a field to specify geographic details. Prior to sending, submitters must mark a checkbox that acknowledges that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."

Details of the ICE Action

The Chinatown raid, which observers say involved dozens of government officers, happened in a popular district of Manhattan where counterfeit products and additional items are regularly available in large quantities – frequently to tourists.

Recordings of Tuesday's raid show several masked and armed federal agents restraining and arresting a person, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of residents pursued the agents along the roads. An armored military vehicle was observed rolling through the city streets.

Leadership Statements

At a news conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four American citizens were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He clarified the persons were released on the following day with no accusations made.

"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman stated. "This represents a militarized effort to incite tension. It is simply a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the military to prevent conflict that they initiated."

Extensive Outcry

Anger over the immigration operation escalated – all three mayoral candidates criticized the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that create fear, rather than security. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.

New York City immigrant rights groups expressed outrage also.

"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and riot gear to target small merchants trying to make a living. This raid had no relation to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and areas," remarked the head of a rights organization.

Agency Rules

ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has said it refrains from apprehend American nationals. Yet, external research has discovered that more than 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by immigration authorities since the beginning of the present government.

Ongoing Trend

Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in New York and across the US lately.

A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Rallies opposing ICE are commonplace along with claims of violence and inhumane treatment.

Recently, a submission filed by advocacy organizations stated medical neglect of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
