A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such medications should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
