President Trump Invites Relatives of Injured Military Personnel to the White House
Former President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has extended an invitation the family of a Guard member tragically killed last week to come to the executive mansion.
He noted that he contacted her parents and they were “heartbroken”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Shooting
US army specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was fatally shot in a attack on Wednesday in DC.
Her colleague, US air force staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, continues receiving treatment in grave state.
Vigils across West Virginia have taken place in their remembrance.
White House Call
The president explained he’s proposed a meeting at the presidential residence for the parents of both individuals of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I said: ‘When you’re able, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to recognize Sarah,” the president told reporters. “And likewise with him, no matter the outcome.”
Community Response
Attendees assembled over the weekend at a local school in West Virginia to honor Beckstrom.
Both they had been fulfilling duties with the West Virginia National Guard as part of the president’s federal initiative to aid policing efforts in the capital.
Remembering Sarah Beckstrom
“She was the individual that instructors wished for. She behaved with calm resilience, a warm expression and a positive energy that inspired people around her,” Hankins, the leader of Beckstrom’s previous school, stated to the press. “She was kind, compassionate and always ready to support those in need.”
Funeral plans for Sarah are yet to be finalized.
Legal Steps and Policy Changes
Officials have indicted a twenty-nine-year-old suspect with a charge of murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while carrying a weapon.
The event led the government to pause refugee claims and temporarily stop issuing visas to holders of passports from Afghanistan.
Condition of Wolfe
Andrew Wolfe, a resident of the city, enlisted in early 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman high school, according to the AP.
He is still undergoing care and is “battling to survive”, West Virginia leader Morrisey mentioned on television.
Attorney general the attorney general stated on the program that she also intended to speak to his relatives.
Impact of the Fallen Soldier
Beckstrom, from Summersville, completed her education from Webster County high school in 2023 and began her service not long after, serving as a law enforcement officer with distinction, as stated by the military.
“She had a lot of kindness and she certainly had courage,” Morrisey informed the audience at the service. “Though her time ended too soon, she has created a legacy that’s going to last forever.”
