The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a crucial European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," said the player after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
