The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
