Three Lions Coach Reveals His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach competed in League Two. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. His path from player to coach commenced as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his calling.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he established a name through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs included elite sides, and he held international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the top in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a structured plan that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their strategies feature mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. He stresses the national team spirit and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

Barry describes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he states. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. We must not only to stay ahead of changes but to surpass them and create our own ones. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in that period. It's about moving it from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To create a system for effective use in that window, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured qualification after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; instead. This period to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach must reflect the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the robustness, the honesty. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared now. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger to get better is relentless. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, and he trained detainees during an exercise.

He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included won over and he recruited the coach to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the club got rid of nearly all assistants except Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry away from London to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
