Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Fan Response
One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
